I am happy to have read two items of good news coming from the Vatican. First of all, there are rumors about a new forthcoming papal encyclical in which the environmental challenges would be given ample space. I think this is crucially important. The RCC, because of its universal scope and its presence at many levels of society (especially also at grassroots level, where environmental directly hits people), has a unique responsibility to act. There are also profound theological and spiritual perspectives at stake, as well as the opportunity to further develop theological thought on creation, the Trinity and the church.
Second, Cardinal Renato Martino, responsible for the Pontifical Council on Justice and Peace, announced a document on Globalisation and Poverty, in which attention will be paid to the principle of the preferential option for the poor as well as to the principles of the social teaching of the Church.
I am looking forward to both documents, as they may represent clear prophetic signs of the Church in today’s world.
